MPC // CGI Production
THE CHALLENGE

CGI artists work tirelessly to produce flawless moving images for world-renowned directors, many of whom they never meet. The production environment functions like a factory line, with artists focusing solely on their daily tasks, often unaware of the broader pipeline. Until recently, the allocation of work at MPC was entirely manual. The challenge was to bring efficiency into this creative ecosystem, not to replace artistry, but to support it, allowing artists to concentrate on their craft without operational friction.

THE INTERVENTION

We designed a cross-functional planning tool to support multiple departments in collaborating more effectively. The aim was to give everyone, from producers to planners to artists, a shared view of task progress across the entire production pipeline. It had to work at multiple scales: from high-level operational planning down to day-to-day artist workflows.

Process highlights

Research

  • Interviews & Observations: Conducted cross-departmental interviews and on-site observations to uncover friction points in daily workflows.

  • Disconnected Tools Mapping: Identified a fragmented ecosystem of tools causing delays and miscommunication.

  • Research Artefacts: Created visual artefacts to communicate process complexity and user pain points across teams.

  • User Roles & Behaviours: Mapped how different roles interacted with the pipeline, surfacing gaps in transparency and ownership.

Design

  • Workshops: Facilitated iterative workshops with producers, planners, and artists to co-create and refine solutions.

  • Workflow-to-Wireframe Process: Translated current workflows into early design concepts and progressively refined them into wireframes.

  • High fidelity Designs: created clickable prototypes in collaboration with a product designer who was simultaneously creating a new design system.

Outcomes

  • High-Level Planning Tool: Designed for operational oversight—supporting technical planning, resource allocation, and trend monitoring.

  • Artist Workflow Planner: Built for daily task management, enabling planning, revision tracking, and internal communication within teams.

  • Predictive Layer: Integrated features to surface trends and automate routine decisions, reducing manual planning effort.

  • This platform gave MPC a high level of visibility on workflow that did not exist before, reduced manual work involved in planning (sometimes done on a whiteboard in each department), and created a central place for feedback, following a shot from concept to director feedback.
