Levi's // Digital
THE CHALLENGE

With legacy systems, both infinitely complex and disparate, Levi’s set out to become a digital-first business, and I was part of that journey for 3 years. I worked across establishing three connected platforms, each tackling a different part of the sales and production journeys. The challenge was to untangle & understand how all these areas functioned, both online and offline, how they linked together, and what nuances existed across local and global contexts, and create a new systems that staff and clients could get onboard with.

THE INTERVENTION

We created a platform where buyers could browse, curate, and share collections and marketing stories—seamlessly connected to the ordering system for a smooth end-to-end experience. Next, we introduced the company’s first AI-powered prediction tool, embedding trust mechanisms that gave employees the final say. Lastly, we developed an AI solution to help LEVI’S navigate global sizing complexities. Together, these tools reduced waste and brought the company closer to more sustainable production. The three platforms were business operation critical.

Process highlights

Primary Research

  • Usually started with stakeholder mapping; identifying key users and decision makers to engage with.

  • Handled research planning, logistics, and conducted series of interviews, and established relationships with employees.

  • In the series of interviews, I would usually interrogate the process from end to end from one interview to the next. The visually documented journeys would then helps in identifying where staff followed similar and different processes in different locations. We needed to reach a version of truth when nobody was sure.

  • Over a period of 3 years, I spoke to over a 100 different Levi’s staff across multiple departments in US, Europe and Asia.

  • Analysing digital tool demos and data inspection. A critical exercise in mapping current ways of working and understanding information hierarchies. As a team, we would understand which figures are used to essential to create calculations, vs the figures that served as indicators.

  • Thematic Analysis bringing forwards key user journeys, challenges, and areas of opportunity.

  • Discovery design workshops with teams to gather research and give a sense of ownership in the project

  • Design research communication sat as a pillar to conducting research with different areas of the business, ensuring that all key stakeholders aligned in vision and purpose. This was done through "heartbeat" presentations, highlighting key moments and design artefacts, such as user journeys, system maps, process maps, etc.

Co-creation

  • Co-creation workshops to generate and find the right solutions with participants representing different roles and parts of the business, globally. I designed these workshops carefully, based on emerging themes in research.

  • Inspiring from co-creation, as a design team we held our own ideation sessions, where our focus would be on combining staff ideas into digitally sound interactive solutions.

  • Key user flows sketched and wireframed as a first point of a digital solution.

  • Testing wireframes with key stakeholders and users

  • I often set up weekly or monthly sessions with groups of expert users to co-create and get feedback, so users felt truly involved in the process

  • Collaborating with Product designers to move the designs into visual design using the existing Levi's Design System

  • Clickable prototypes were created, tested with users, and used in final playback to relevant stakeholders

  • Working with developers and product managers to create user stories, prioritise the backlog, and help developers apply designs as expected

Outcomes

The process of creating one platform from 0 to functioning took months at a time, but each platform we developed sat the heart of the business.

These projects shifted Levi’s staff from time-consuming manual tasks and frequent errors to a seamless, intuitive experience. By mimicking physical interactions and automating complex calculations, the tools empowered teams to move from reactive to proactive, knowing exactly when and where to step in, and with confidence.
